nexus one 300x200 Google Launches War on Iphone Today Google unveiled the Nexus One smartphone running on it’s Android operating system. Pundits across the web are suggesting this smartphone was launched (including improved market share) is to commondier Apple’s lofty position as the present iPhone king. Could Nexus One be the device to replace the iPhone? Fat chance, Apple has such a lead in this market that every other company from Nokia to RIM’s Blackberry is playing a desperate game of catch up, or watching their own market share dry up.

The added value of the Apple apps store gives the iPhone present customers a comfortable platform to expand their phone experience and any other company stepping in will simply be hoping for a distance second place finish.

The people at Google have it right when you consider this quote I swiped off www.cnn.com, “We are very happy to be able to offer a choice,” said Mario Queiroz, Google’s vice president of product management. Add the feature of being able to use the device with or without a wireless network, which I take to mean you can surf without a network, the Nexus One could become a smartphone that the industry will have to watch.

The thing for me that is so striking about Google offering their own smartphone is when you consider how they could potentially corner the market with their mainstay search engine. If they can provide a device, I’ll go on a limb and call it Nexus Two, I know I am fearless that is faster web search device you can see how Google could cut into the iPhone market share, which presently is in the high 7o’s or higher. In the next couple of years it will be interesting to see how this war will play out. Right now it’s iPhone battle to lose.
